In the autumn of 2019, Great Circle opened a new high school for teens in recovery from substance misuse. The brief summed up the writer’s assignment nicely: a “tightrope” between the “horrors of substance use disorder and overzealous optimism”. Getting the tone right was everything.

I tried to split the difference between horror and optimism and wrote something our clients felt was too clinical. The second draft was approved without a change.
